Greetings! I’m Derek Olsen. This is the site where I try to pull together the various things that I do on the web.
I earned a Ph.D. in New Testament from Emory University in 2011; my outside area was Homiletics. Working under Dr. Luke Timothy Johnson, my dissertation was entitled “Reading Matthew with Monks: Cross-Cultural Conversation between Modern Biblical Scholarship and Early Medieval Monastic Interpretation.” In a nutshell, I looked at what modern biblical scholarship on Matthew could learn from early monastic models by investigating the Matthean sermons of one particular English Benedictine abbot, Ælfric of Eynsham, within their liturgical context.
I am an active layman in the Episcopal Church.
